Leena who?
I am a travel agency owner, a professional guide and pianist, happily married, mother of three daughters, “mommy” to five grandchildren. In addition to Finnish, I speak Swedish, English and French fluently, Italian quite well, German so and so. I dance (salsa, jazz, dance training), love all kinds of studies, belong to the Zonta organization (whose mission is to improve the status of girls and women in the world), sing in a gospel choir, love cooking (I cook lunch for my aunt who is over 90 years old 5 days of the week), I juggle, paddle with my husband in our double kayak in the summer, do yoga. I swim in the sea every day of the year unless I'm traveling.
Pianist?
I never wanted to be a concert pianist, as I didn't want to be away from home for long periods of time and worry about agents, concerts and critiques. Besides, I got tendonitis on my wrist when I was 18, and it affected my choice of profession. In my own business, I can play in peace and enjoy giving a musical experience to my customers. I always tell something about the pieces I play. If I can't find a good historical point I'll tell you at least what Ihink when I p good feedback on this.
My education
I was an exchange student in Chicago, and I learned to represent Finland there.
After graduation, I studied to be a secretary and correspondent, but most of my working career was spent
in adult education, for which I am also qualified. In addition, I taught French, English and music in schools.
One of the skills I learned during my adult education career was presentation technique, which I taught over 20 years. The fruit of this skill is the success I've had with most important customer, Viking Line/Sweden, whose annual marketing event I have been asked to join for nearly 10 years. This has resulted in bringing many groups of pensioners from Sweden to visit Finland - I have a 2-day-package for them. I keep developing my guided tours all the time, for example combining music to my story telling.
Studying is part of my daily life — I am always practicing piano, studying languages, reading materials, taking new courses etc. I strive to renew myself and become the best version of myself.
A couple of mottos
All places are interesting
. I strive to make people fall in love with places. I'll turn all my material upside down to find fascinating facts about each place. It's my job as a guide to find the gems.
The Guide Union had a great motto a couple of years ago:: “
Book a guide, understand what you see
”. That sums up my actions nicely. To you, a boulder on the roadside is just a rock, but let me tell you that a couple of centuries ago it saved from enslavement two children who hid behind it as soldiers marched past. Now, would you look at that stone with other eyes?
“
Smooth seas don't make skillful sailors
” is a thought I keep in mind when facing difficult tasks. I have learned a way to solve tasks that seem overwhelming-- I divide them into “atoms”. In the style of “find that email”, “read that email”, “think of one solution”, “implement that solution”, etc. Everything has been resolved and I'm starting to be a reasonably good sailor.
Is it constructive or destructive
, is my main question in life.
Hanko's most positive person
I am
so
proud of this title. I received it in 2018. It's pretty cool that my youngest daughter registered me as a candidate without telling me, and the choice was made by public vote. That title has brought me all kinds of fun things — I've been a speaker of Hanko Days, held a welcoming speech at Hanko Picnic and given all sorts of speeches and presentations.
One thing that positivity brings to my life is this: whenever something feels difficult or distressing, my mind automatically starts generating ideas for a solution.
I never stress - in my thirties, I had to think about the doctor's alternatives: “Either you eat stomach ulcer medicine for the rest of your life, or you stop stressing.” Well, I stopped stressing and I'm pretty much a master at it by now.
